running fit
The intentional difference in dimensions of mating mechanical parts that permits them to move relative to each other. A free running fit has liberal allowance; it is used on high-speed rotating journals or shafts. A medium fit has less allowance; it is used on low-speed rotating shafts and for sliding parts. Running fits are affected markedly by their surface finish and the effectiveness of lubrication.
