Over the past century, petroleum-based products gradually replaced similar products that were once made from plants. However, now a wide variety of fuels, chemicals, lubricants, adhesives, plastics, and other materials derived from renewable plant resources are being substituted for petroleum-based products. Economic, technical, environmental, social, and political forces are driving this transition.
