polyglot programming
The first computer systems were built by English-language speakers and supported text in English. However, speakers and writers of other languages soon demanded support for their writing systems, and over the years computer systems have evolved to meet that demand. Because this process was evolutionary and because some languages are easier to support than others, the mechanisms used by programmers vary considerably.
