The form of navigation in which position is determined relative to external reference points, usually fixed points on the Earth. It is the oldest form of navigation. The following remarks are formulated in the context of marine navigation. However, the use of landmarks to navigate terrestrial vehicles and aircraft is well established. Some authors refer to this means of navigating aircraft as pilotage.
