picture tube
A cathode-ray tube, or CRT, used as a television display. A cathode-ray tube has an electron gun, electromagnetic deflection yoke, shadow mask or grill assembly, and a phosphor screen that is the light emitter (see illustration). All of this is contained in a glass envelope. Television picture tubes are largely being replaced by flat-panel displays, such as liquid-crystal displays.
