The family Ailuropodidae contains two species of pandas—the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and the lesser or red panda (Ailurus fulgens). Until relatively recently, the giant panda had been classified in the family Ursidae with the bears, and the red panda had been included in the family Procyonidae along with raccoons, ringtails, and coatis.
