Palm muting is a guitar or bass guitar playing technique, where the palm of the picking hand is placed over the strings to acquire muted sound. While this technique is also used in other types of music, such as classical, it is most prominent in metal, and especially thrash metal music which owes much of its distinctive sound to palm muting.
