Mobile satellite service (MSS) systems provide voice and data communications service to users over a wide area. MSS systems can serve a whole continent and its coastal waters via one or several Earth-orbiting satellites. In contrast, cellular communications systems use thousands of base transceiver stations to provide communications in desired areas.
