migration and navigation (vertebrates)
The periodic movement of a population of animals, or a part of it, away from a region and their subsequent return to that region is termed migration. Migratory movements may be daily, as with fishes that move upward and downward in the water column; annual, as with many birds and mammals; or irregular, as with some salmon and fresh-water eels that may require a lifetime to complete the migration.
