The plant Litchi chinensis, also called litchi, a member of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). It is a native of southern China, where it has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. It is now being grown successfully in India, Republic of South Africa, Hawaii, Burma, Madagascar, West Indies, Brazil, Honduras, Japan, Australia, and the southern United States.
