kangaroo

Common name for a member of the family Macropodidae, the largest living marsupials. The 61 species in this family also include the wallabies, wallaroos, quokka, and pademelons. In Australia, the term kangaroo is applied only to the largest species of kangaroos, while all small and medium-sized ground-dwelling kangaroos are called wallabies. Except for their size, wallabies are practically the same as kangaroos in appearance as well as habits.
