A professional who inspects heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration installations for conformance to safety laws and regulations and approved plans and specifications. Responsibilities include:
- Inspects heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and facilities for conformance to safety laws and ordinances designed to prevent use of faulty equipment.
- Issues notices for correction of defective installations and issues citations to violators of safety code.
- Inspects gas heating appliances in retail stores and notifies dealers to remove unapproved appliances.
- Confers with property owners or agents to discuss and approve alteration plans to heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment that comply with safety regulations.
- Investigates complaints regarding installation of heating and refrigeration equipment by unlicensed contractors.
- Keeps records and prepares reports of inspections and investigations for use by administrative or judicial authorities.
- May investigate installations where fire or death has occurred.
- May determine percentage and acceptability of contract work completed for purposes of progress payments.
