The development of agriculture during the last 2000 years, combined with technological advances in the past 500 years, have enabled humans to permanently convert large areas from natural ecosystems into mosaics of monoculture cropland interspersed with remnant natural habitats. In both North and South America, the written notes of the first explorers and settlers provide evidence that the native New World inhabitants maintained extensive landscapes by using fire and agriculture.
