An important spice from the fruits of the perennial herb Carum carvi, of the family Apiaceae. A native of Europe and western Asia, it is now cultivated in many temperate areas of both hemispheres. The small, brown, slightly curved fruits are used in perfumery, cookery, confectionery, in medicine, and for flavoring beverages.
