bartonellosis
An arthropod-borne infection caused by the bacterium Bartonella bacilliformis. The disease, also known as Carrión's disease, is confined to South America. It is characterized by two distinct clinical forms, Oroya fever and verruga peruana. Oroya fever causes a high temperature accompanied by the destruction of red blood cells; verruga peruana is a benign, nodular wart that develops on the surface of the skin.
