aerodynamic decelerators

Aerodynamic decelerators are devices that are designed to produce drag and are made from textiles (as opposed to mechanical drag devices such as spoilers). The first parachute jump was in approximately 1785 and the first free-fall parachute jump, in 1919. The technology of aerodynamic decelerators is fairly mature. As with many aerospace systems, new applications require constant incremental improvement in performance and reduction in weight and volume.
